Administrative Questions
- Can I pay by installment? Yes you can - you can choose how much and how often, just make sure by the end of August that you have paid up fully.
- What is the preferred payment method? Our preferred payment method is via direct debit into out bank account as this minimises transactions fees for the club, meaning more money is available to reinvest into the club :)
- When do registrations open/close? We aim to have registration forms available at the beginning of April with the end of April being our first training
week. However, specific dates vary from year to year, based on weather and ice availability.
- I want to be more involved in the club, how can I help? Please get in touch with Michi Speck michi.a.speck@gmail.com or give him a call on 021
271 8281. Or come along to our AGM - dates and times will be emailed out and everyone is welcome:) - I have questions/suggestions for the club or the wesbite? Awesome, please let Michi Speck know at michi.a.speck@gmail.com or give him a call on 021 271 8281.
Starting out / Beginner / New to Ice Hockey Related Questions
- What happens if the weather is bad? If its raining, snowing, or just too warm the session will be cancelled. We aim to make all cancellations before 3pm on day of the evening sessions/practices/games, and as early as possible on the Sunday morning beginner sessions. Currently, cancellations will be done via email (make sure you are registered) and on the juinor and senior Bull Tahr Facebook pages.
- Can I hire skates? Yes, skates can be hired from the Tekapo Springs for MIH sessions (practices and games) for $3 per hire. Note the club also has a small selection of skates available for our junior players, but these are prioritised for our competitive junior players who are travelling to various rinks.
- Does my child need to know how to ice skate before joining? No, an area of the rink is reserved for our most junior players and those still learning the
basics of skating. With all the padded gear on, your child will feel more confident to get on the ice and take the early slips and slides as they start out.
- My child has never played Ice Hockey before, how much physical contact should be expected? We encourage those still learning the basics and our younger members to focus on drills and good technique before getting into tournaments and physical contact games. The practice games we hold as a club are low contact and we strongly advise all players to wear their full protective gear. We ask parents to ensure gear fits well – speak to Michi if you have any concerns regarding the gear you have hired michi.a.speck@gmail.com or 021 271 8281.
Competitive Tournament Related Questions
- How do I know if my child is ready for competitive tournaments? There is nothing more rewarding for us as coaches to send kids off to their first tournament:) Typically we as coaches see that your child is up to the ability; we will actively encourage the child and parents to partake in the tournaments.
- If my child chooses to play competitively what do the fees cover?
To play competitively the children need to be signed up with Ice Hockey New Zealand have paid the IHNZ membership fee, which is currently $50 per child. Please contact Judith Speck club registar to sign up.
- Are there any other expenses I should be aware of before signing up? There is an extra cost for players registering competitively (IHNZ fee). If you normally hire skates from Tekapo Springs, you will need to hire skates at the competition hosting rink, you will also need to sort your own accommodation and travel expenses. The MIH Club annually applies for rural sports transportation grants. These grants vary from year to, but can amout to ~$200, which is distributed to parents partaking in competitive tournaments.
